Description
Early 18th century French giltwood mirror in Regence style circa 1730-1750. Marginal mirror plates border a larger central mirror plate on all sides set within embellished giltwood moldings. The frame is carved with strapwork, foliage and flowers, the outset corners are accentuated with bold acanthus leaf styling. The central mirror plate is replaced, but surrounding marginal plates are original. Losses to silvered reverse of marginal plates (tin-mercury amalgam mirrors) result in darkened spots and a diamond dust effect, which is decorative and beautiful.
